Virginia Legislature passes AI bill, but unclear if governor will sign it

Virginia is the first to pass a bill regulating how certain types of artificial intelligence are used. This is very interesting to me following the recent trump administration pushing the opposite way regarding how AI is regulated. I predict more states (probably next up will be California) to publish their own bills over the upcoming weeks with similar language.

AI is exciting, but also its associated risk is a top concern for every organization I speak with. I haven’t met one person responsible for security within an organization that feels comfortable with employees using AI however they want. I’m often asked about concerns regarding AI taking notes in meetings, what happens with data shared with AI, and the latest fear of AI able to take action. Part of the fear comes from the lack of laws regulating AI meaning its up the technology provider and consumer to ask these types of questions vs asking if a AI solution meets some form of regulation.

Check out the post from iapp.org HERE about Viginia’s bill. You are likely to see similar language in future upcoming bills.
